George Lucas: House 5 in Vedic Astrology
Explore the mind of George Lucas, how he evolved his communication skills and became a creative "powerhouse" known throughout the world. Here we take a look at his House 5 in the sign of Virgo.
In this post we’re examining George Lucas’ life through his House 5 in Virgo, ruled by Mercury. We’ll examine the “default settings” of his Mercury, and how that planetary energy within him had to evolve as he began making huge impacts as a creative force in our modern culture—even decades later!

House 5: Virgo
House 5 deals with creativity, children, the conceptual mind and one’s ability to learn, grow and make positive changes in one’s life. It can also represent speculative investments, romance, spiritual techniques, writing and drawing, the government and the capacity to advise others. House 5 is a Trinal house of grace and a Dharma house.
The sign of Virgo overlaps with Lucas’ House 5. Virgo is a tamasic sign, dual, feminine, Vaishya caste, and embodies the earth element. This sign of the maiden represents purification, digestive fire and detoxification. It’s the field of daily routines, small details, integrity, practical matters and knowing one’s role in the grander orchestration of life.
When House 5 qualities combine with Virgo, the individual blends together creativity with their daily routines. In a positive scenario, their daily tasks build over time to create an exponentially improved life from where they started. Getting into a creative zone with writing, acting or some kind of artistic expression is generally seen in a Taurus Ascendant, and they’ll approach this type of expression in a detailed way.
Rasi Aspects and Prosperity & Annihilation
Saturn is the only planet Rasi aspecting Virgo. This produces a harsher quality on the sign, but one of endurance and patience for greatness to come from hard work.
House 5 for Lucas has more annihilation than prosperity with 5 points to 3. While his creativity was abundant, it was a painstaking expression of writing out by hand the entire trilogy of Star Wars with a pencil on notebook paper over a span of two years. He also had difficulty fathering children, but adopted three of them and had one through a surrogate. (This is interesting with Jupiter being so near his 5th cusp; however, never underestimate the power of Rasi aspects!)
Mercury’s Function for a Taurus Ascendant
Virgo is ruled by Mercury and is Lucas’ 5th lord. House 5 is a Trinal house and Mercury’s other rulership is over the neutral 2nd house, so Mercury is auspicious. This means that it’s a planet of intelligence, creativity and managing finances. This rulership gives great monetary management and practicality to Taurus, creating great potential for material wealth, especially when tied to creativity.
Dignity, Avashtas and Shad Bala of Mercury
Just as described in House 2 for Lucas, Mercury is in Neutral dignity, in Vriddha Balaadi Avashta and Svapna. Once again, this seemingly mediocre Mercury has sufficient Dig Bala at 168%. He’s able to stay true to his goals, does what he needs to do for himself, sets good boundaries with others in order to achieve his goals and has practical direction to be effective in his work.
Lajjitaadi Avashtas on Mercury
Mercury is conjunct Sun and Venus. It’s aspected by the waning Moon by 41 points and by Jupiter to 33 points.
The Sun agitates Mercury to -84.8 and the Moon starves it to +153. Venus fully delights Mercury up to +897 points. In the end, Mercury is still standing with +56.8 points. (This score removes the positive scoring from the Sun, as I believe there isn’t a positive Avashta happening here.)
Sun agitating Mercury makes communication really painful. In fact, it was difficult for him to communicate to the actors he directed in both American Graffiti and Star Wars: A New Hope. After those two movies, he hired others to direct the screenplays he wrote. It wasn’t until 20 years later that he directed again, but from a matured ability.
Yogas
Mercury has a positive Yoga Judgment scoring with +4.5 points and -0.5 points. This is extremely beneficial for the yogas involving Lucas’ finances and creativity. Mercury also has good Ishta at 31.6.
Mercury occupies his first house. Because it’s in Neutral dignity, old and sleepy, there are some setbacks to the yogas, however with its positive Yoga Judgment score and good Ishta, there are many positives.
Positively, he’s prolifically creative. Lucas told Bill Moyers in an interview, “My imagination runs wild… I have more stories than I could possibly do in my lifetime.”
Lucas invested well, whether it’s been in his films, his companies or in real estate. Spiritual practices have improved his life path, as he shares consistently through his Star Wars movies that incorporate Eastern-influenced spiritual attributes. I dare say there is some good past life karma at play in this incarnation. He’s charitable, humble and generous. He founded the George Lucas Educational Foundation to encourage innovation in schools. When he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, the majority of the $4 billion sale went to charities.
Up next! House 6 divulges more on George Lucas’ health and his ability to try to make choices for higher fulfillment, even in the face of adversity—a theme throughout his movies. We’ll be exploring his House 6 in the sign of Libra, the sign of exchange and fairness.
These are so fascinating and insightful. Thanks for posting.
